Victims of shame

He was a proud man and a star,
on the high school ball team.
He married Mary and his car.
She was a sweet queen.
School sensation.
A different man now from the war.
Mary’s gone, his life goes
But he has nothing left to live for.
Now he’s caught between the lines.
And he sees the world through the open end of a bottle.
I’ve seen your face before.
It was a long time ago.
You found that fate was hard on you.
You are the victim of shame.
To not venture very far.
Cindy’s kids came early,
Now she’s hangin out at the corner bar.
Three to nine at the deli-mart.
It don’t come close to a welfare check but it surely
beats a lazy heart.
Wheeling round in a shopping cart.
The car’s gone down again.
Three dirty faces and a broken part.
No one really cares she’s tired.
Of all the talk around in this cliquey town.
Lord just send a white knight.
